Santa Ana –was settled in the 1500’s and in 1850, the first Catholic chapel was built in honor of St. Ann. Founded in 1907 with a present day population of approximately 35,000 inhabitants, it covers an area of 25 square miles located 13 km west of San Jose and 25 minutes from the International Airport. It is made up of six districts or cantons as they are called. Santa Ana, Salitral, Pozos, Rio Oro Piedades and Brasil This district is found at the foothills between Escazú and Puriscal and drained by eight rivers.
The town of Santa Ana is linked by the old road between Escazú and Ciudad Colon as well as the newer highway linking the same towns. It is situated just west of trendy Escazú, this smaller, alluring suburb of San José is growing rapidly. Here you will also find a large expat population, due to the modern conveniences provided and its cultural atmosphere. It is known for its onions, beef, fruits, vegetables, and coffee. Pottery too, is an important part of the economy. Santa Ana has two hydroelectrical plants (Belén and Brasil). The climate is warm, dry and comfortable.
Santa Ana has been recently experiencing unprecedented real estate and commercial development while still in many ways maintaining its traditional feel of a typical Costa Rican town, along with its predominantly Costa Rican population. However, the area of Lindora has become the place of choice with upscale supermarkets, restaurants, banks, medical and dental clinics, beauty salons, gas stations, coffee houses, hotels, business centers, private schools, and commercial centers springing up everywhere. Parque Valle del Sol golf course located in Santa Ana is the first and the only professional golf course in Costa Rica open to the public in the Central Valley. The 18-hole championship golf course is challenging and fair under most conditions and downright tough when the strong winds come down from the surrounding mountains.
